‍What was the defining moment that brought Nananita to life? Among so many materials and techniques, what drew you to crochet as the signature material for the brand? We'd also love to hear about the journey of developing your first crochet pieces.

M: 어린 시절 저는 증조할머니 ‘니타 준(Nita June)’과 함께 살았어요. 우리는 할머니를 ‘준’이라고 불렀죠. 할머니는 늘 무언가를 뜨고 계셨어요. 우리를 위해 인형 옷이나 담요를 정성스레 만들어 주시곤 했죠. 제 유년기에 가장 큰 영향을 주신 분이었고, 언젠가 꼭 할머니를 기리는 일을 하고 싶다는 마음을 품고 있었습니다.

어른이 된 후에도 저는 자연스럽게 빈티지 스타일에 끌렸어요. 레이스나 실크, 흔히 볼 수 없는 독특한 패턴의 사물들이요. 수년 동안 애용하던 빈티지 크로셰 가방이 하나 있었는데, 길을 걷다 보면 낯선 이들이 어디서 샀냐고 정말 자주 묻곤 했어요. 바로 그 가방이 나나니타의 첫 제품인 ‘로즈 백(Rose Bag)’의 모티브가 되었습니다. 오랜 시간 패션 업계에서 일하다가 마침내 제 개인적인 창작을 시작하고 할머니의 기억을 기리는 일, 나나니타는 저에게 운명처럼 맞물린 순환의 순간이었어요.

마음에 꼭 드는 샘플을 완성하기까지 수많은 제조사를 거치며 1년 반이라는 시간이 걸렸습니다. 처음에는 핸드 크로셰로 시작했지만 품질의 균일성을 잡기 어려웠어요. 수많은 시행착오 끝에 인도에 있는 훌륭한 팀을 만났고, 탄탄한 내구성과 완벽한 퀄리티를 갖춘 지금의 머신 크로셰 샘플을 완성할 수 있었습니다.

M: Growing up I lived with my great-grandmother, Nita June, but we called her June. She was always knitting a project, making us dolls clothes or blankets. She was a huge influence on my early life, and I always felt I wanted to honour her in some way.

As an adult, my style has always lended itself to vintage influences - lace, silk, items with interesting patterns you don’t often see. I had a vintage crochet bag I wore for years, and would get so many strangers asking where they can get one. I used this bag as the inspiration for Nananita’a first product - the rose bag. Creating Nananita felt like a full circle moment that was meant to happen - honouring the memory of my great-grandmother and starting the journey of my own personal creative pursuit after working with other fashion brands for years.

It took about a year and a half to get a sample I was happy with, and many trials with different manufacturers. We started with hand crochet, which didn’t work out due to inconsistencies. But finally we got a sample that felt right and of strong quality, a machine crochet with a lovely group in India.

What is most important when communicating your creative vision to achieve Nananita's distinctive colour palettes, textures, and quality?

M: 생산에 들어가기 전, 완벽한 기준을 맞추기 위해 모든 스타일마다 셀 수 없이 많은 샘플 과정을 거칩니다. 인도의 파트너 팀은 훌륭하지만, 우리가 수년 동안 입고 싶고 고객에게도 오랫동안 전할 수 있는 정제된 완성도를 위해 치열하게 조율하죠. 디자인한 모티브를 크로셰 패턴으로 구현해 내는 작업이 가장 까다롭고 손이 많이 가는 단계예요.

이 피드백 과정만 최대 9개월이 걸리기도 하기에, 창작의 비전을 현실로 만드는 데 있어 가장 중요한 것은 ‘명확한 소통’입니다. 그중 가장 설레는 순간은 모든 색상의 샘플을 염색할 때예요. 팬톤(Pantone) 컬러를 바탕으로 인도 팀이 최대한 원작에 가깝게 조색해 주는데, 우리가 상상한 톤이 다채로운 음영으로 눈앞에 구현되는 것을 보는 일은 늘 짜릿합니다.

M: Each style has taken many samples to get right before we go into production. Our team in India are wonderful, but we work hard to ensure the final product is refined and something we will want to wear and offer to customers for years to come. Creating the motif from our designs to crochet can be the trickiest part and take many tries. This process of back and forth can take up to 9 months, and clear communication is probably the most important factor in bringing the vision to life.

The most exciting part is when we dye samples of all of the colours, and see what different shades our vision can take on. We use pantone colours and our team dye the styles as close as they can.

M: 아마 그리 놀라운 일은 아니겠지만, 저는 아름다운 정원에 있을 때 가장 행복하고 많은 영감을 받아요. 특히 시냇물이나 분수처럼 곁에 물이 흐르고 있다면 더욱더요. 그리고 요즘은 플로럴 패턴이 프린트된 롤 휴지 같은 사소하고 위트 있는 일상의 물건들에서도 재미있는 영감을 얻고 있습니다.

M: It may not be a surprise that I am most inspired by and happy in beautiful gardens. And especially if there is water close by, a stream or fountain. I am currently also inspired by floral printed toilet rolls.

M: 언제나 ‘내가 직접 입고 싶은 가방’을 만드는 것입니다. 제 눈에 진심으로 아름답고 멋지다면, 저는 그것으로 만족합니다.

M: I always make a bag that I want to wear. If I think it is beautiful or cool, then I am satisfied.

‍Crochet pieces have such a distinctive texture and character. How do you personally style Nananita pieces in your everyday life, and what care tips would you recommend to help them stay beautiful for years to come?

M: 저는 평소 빈티지 그레이 티셔츠에 찰랑이는 화이트 스커트처럼 담백하고 덜어낸(paired back) 룩에 나나니타 가방을 매치하는 편이에요. 가방 자체에 디테일이 풍부하고 컬러감이 또렷해서, 가벼운 옷차림 위에 툭 걸쳐주는 것만으로도 전체적인 룩의 분위기를 단번에 끌어올려 주거든요. 가볍게 패킹할 수 있어 휴가지에서도 완벽한 데일리 아이템이 됩니다.

세탁은 보통 미온수에 조물조물 손세탁합니다. 화이트 컬러는 햇볕 아래 평평하게 뉘어 말려 뽀얀 색감을 유지하고, 컬러가 있는 제품은 그늘에 평평하게 뉘어 건조하는 것을 추천합니다.

I can usually be found styling my Nananita bags with paired back outfits - like a vintage grey t shirt and white flowy skirt. As the bags have a lot of detail and can be bold in colour, I enjoy letting the bag lift an outfit. The bags are such an easy everyday accessory and perfect for a vacation as they pack so light.

I usually hand wash my bags, and if white I will lay it flat in the sun to help keep it bright. If a colour, I will dry it flat in the shade.

‍We'd love to introduce our readers to a small piece of Australia through your eyes. Could you recommend one or two favourite local places—a café, restaurant, neighbourhood, or somewhere you love to spend time?

M: 저는 호주 동부 해안, 바이런 베이(Byron Bay) 바로 북쪽에 살고 있어요. 이곳에서 나고 자랐고, 세계 곳곳을 여행해 보았지만 저에게는 늘 이곳이 집이자 가족을 이루고 싶은 곳입니다.

우리는 하얀 모래사장과 수정처럼 맑은 바다라는 축복을 누리고 있어요. 제가 가장 사랑하는 일상은 레인보우 베이(Rainbow Bay)나 와테고스(Watego’s) 해변의 모래사장 위에서 커피를 마시고, 수영과 서핑을 하며 햇살 아래 누워있는 거예요. 운이 좋으면 돌고래나 혹등고래를 마주치기도 하죠.

조용한 시골 마을 머윌럼바(Murwillumbah)에 있는 ‘비스트로 리비(Bistro Livi)’에서 근사한 식사를 하거나, 커럼빈 밸리(Currumbin Valley)의 계곡과 폭포 아래 나무 그늘에서 수영하고 책을 읽는 시간도 제가 가장 아끼는 순간들입니다.

M: I live on the east coast of Australia, just north of Byron Bay. I grew up here and even though I have ventured out to so many places in the world, it has always been home and is the place I want to grow a family. We are blessed with white sandy beaches and crystal clear water.

Some of my favourite things to do is drink a coffee on the sand, swim, surf and lay in the sun at Rainbow Bay or Watego’s (you might even get a visit from dolphins or humpback whales), eat the most beautiful meal at Bistro Livi in the rural country town of Murwillumbah, or swim and read under the trees at a creek or waterfall in Currumbin Valley.
